The Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR)
Overview:
The Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) is the world's largest archive of social science data for research and instruction. ICPSR maintains and provides access to this vast archive of social science data, and offers training in quantitative methods to facilitate effective data use. To ensure that data resources are available to future generations of scholars, ICPSR preserves data, migrating them to new storage media as changes in technology warrant. In addition, ICPSR provides user support to assist researchers in identifying relevant data for analysis and in conducting their research projects.
ICPSR is a membership-based organization, with over 500 member colleges and universities around the world. UC Berkeley has been a member of ICPSR for over 30 years. UC DATA's Director of Archive Services, Jon Stiles, serves as the Official Representative for ICPSR, appointed to assist individuals at on campus with accessing and utilizing ICPSR data.
Access to ICPSR Data:
Who can access:
If you are a student, faculty or staff member at the University of California, Berkeley, you may use the data resources of ICPSR.
How to access:
Direct access to ICPSR is available to users on the Berkeley network. Use QUICK LINKS to go directly to the ICPSR web site.
Off-campus users need to authenticate using the Library Proxy Server. The proxy server provides off-campus access to electronic resources licensed by the UC Berkeley Library. Current UC Berkeley students, faculty, staff, registered visiting scholars and postdoctoral fellows with a CalNet ID or Library PIN are eligible to use this service. You do not need the proxy server if you connect to the Internet through the UC Berkeley network: in a campus building or residence hall, via AirBears, or via the Home IP dial-up services.
Create a MyData account:
The first time you download data, you are required to register with ICPSR, create a MyData Account, and choose a password.
For subsequent visits you log into your MyData account using your email address and the password you selected.
ICPSR/UCB Use Agreement:
Any study obtained remains the property of ICPSR and when downloading data from ICPSR, you agree not to share the data with anyone other than faculty members, students, or staff of the University of California Berkeley.
SDA at ICPSR
ICPSR offers a number of ways to do on-line analysis of their datasets. One of these is SDA, a program for web-based analysis analysis developed at UC Berkeley. Do you want to learn more about SDA? Go to ICPSR's Webinar: Analyze Data Online on Demand - an Introduction to SDA. Download slides or view a RealPlayer movie: you'll get an introduction to SDA and what it does, and learn how to do analyses with SDA.
At ICPSR's webinar page, you'll find many webinars to help you learn how to analysze data.
