The Roper Center
Overview:
The Roper Center Public Opinion Archives, founded in 1947, is "the most comprehensive and up-to-date source of national public opinion in the United States." Its holdings include surveys conducted since 1935 by such organizations as Louis Harris and Associates, the Gallup Organization, the National Opinion Research Center, ABC News, CBS News, CNN, Fox News, NBC News, the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Newsweek, USA Today, Washington Post and the Associated Press.

Data in the Roper Center collection is provided through UC DATA on an annual subscription basis. iPOLL contains nearly half a million survey questions and answers asked in the US over the last 65 years by more than 150 survey organizations.

Access to Roper Center Data:

Who can access:
If you are a student, faculty or staff member at the University of California, Berkeley, you may use the data resources of the Roper Center including RoperExpress and iPoll, after an initial registration.

How to access:
Use the iPOLL link (see QUICK LINKS) to locate national and US public opinion polls. Searches can be restricted by time period, topic, or survey organization.

Use the RoperExpress link to download datasets in ASCII or SPSS portable formats from the Roper Center's on-line catalog of studies. You can search by date, topic, and survey organization. Datasets not available via RoperExpress may be requested by contacting the UC Data Archive.

Access is available to Berkeley network users via IP Authentication. Off-campus users need to authenticate using the Library Proxy Server.

E-mail registration:
The first time you download data, you are required to register your e-mail address with Roper. No password is needed.

Roper Center/UCB Use Agreement:
Any study obtained remains the property of The Roper Center and when downloading data from Roper, you agree not to share the data with anyone other than faculty members, students, or staff of the University of California Berkeley.
