Moving Toward a Majority: California Latino Population
Between 1990 and the year 2000, the California Latino population increased from 25.8% (7.69 million persons) to 32.4% (10.97 million persons) of the state’s total population. According to the latest vital statistics, Latino births account for 3.7% over 1999 of the 531,285 infants born in the year 2000; moreover Latino births in 2000 increased by 3.7% over 1999. The trend is clear - projections are that Latinos will be forty percent of California's population within twenty years and will become the largest single population group (passing non-Hispanic whites) shortly thereafter.
The purpose of this web site is to assemble in one place the most complete social, economic and demographic profile of California Latinos, based upon the latest Census, immigration, political participation and economic data available. The site supplies tables, charts and maps which quantify who are the California Latinos, where they live, where they come from and how they are faring economically and socially.
