Ongoing International Collaboration with the Cuban Instituto de Informacion Cientifica y Tecnologica (IDICT)
From November 19 to 21, Ilona Einowski, Kamran Nayeri and Jon Stiles conducted two workshops organized by IDICT and hosted at BIOMUNDI in Havana, Cuba. Funded by the Social Science Research Council.

The first workshop, An Introduction to Digital Libraries with Examples from the California Digital Library was led by Einowski and Stiles, and attended by 34 professionals from 17 organizations from across the country. The second workshop, The Uses of Administrative Data in Social Policy Research was conducted by Nayeri and Stiles. This workshop provided an introduction to why, for what purposes, and how administrative data are used for social policy research in the United States with particular reference to UC DATA's own experience. Thirty one professionals from 17 organizations from across Cuba attended the workshop.

The idea for conducting these workshops arose out a UC DATA hosted visit to Berkeley by two leaders of IDICT in March 2003. Initiated by Dr. Kamran Nayeri and funded by the Social Science Research Council, this visit laid the grounds for further collaboration.
