The UC DATA Web Site provides users immediate access to our data files via FTP.
UC Berkeley Users of ICPSR
Who can use the site?
A portion of our collection is available to the public. To access these data select one of the options under Public from the frame on the left.
UC DATA manages the campus affiliation with the Bureau of the Census State Data Center Program and The Field Research Corporation (The California Polls).
In addition, UC DATA is the Berkeley campus contact for both the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) and The Roper Center.
The UC DATA holdings are organized into those data file which are available to the general public (Public) and those which are restricted to access by UC Berkeley affiliates (UCB Only).
UCB Only access requires that the user
log in from a Berkeley domain account (.berkeley.edu). Other logins will generate an error message.
If you have a topic, but are unsure about which archive to search, we suggest you begin with the either the ICPSR or the Roper web sites. In order to insure access to the most up-to-date listings of available data, UC DATA’s web site utilizes the originating archive search engines. If you are interested in California public opinion data, select Field Polls to search the California Polls from The Field Research Corporation.
The ICPSR web site allows you to search by keywords in the Title, by the Principal Investigator (PI) or the full Abstract.
The Roper web site provides Title/Abstract keyword searching, as well as restriction options for Date Range, Country, Survey Organization, Sponsor, and Type of Sample.
The Field Polls search site at UC San Diego allows you to search by keyword and year.
Clicking one of these options from the menu to the left delivers two browser frames. The left frame provides a way to search the holdings of the archive you have chosen.
How do I access the data?
You will see that the files in the right frame are named according to the identifying information from the originating archive. For the studies from ICPSR, the four digit ICPSR Study Number uniquely identifies each study. For Roper, the studies are arranged by the Roper Study Number. The Field Polls are organized by year and sequence number within year (calXXYY) where cal indicates California Field Poll, XX indicates the last two digits of the year and YY indicates the sequence of the poll within that year. For example, cal0204 is the 4th poll conducted in 2002.
Clicking on the file name will initiate an FTP download. For more information, see FTP HELP on the menu to the left.
If the study you need is not listed in the right frame, send an e-mail request to ucdata@berkeley.edu with the pertinent study information. To insure appropriate use of archive services, only requests from berkeley.edu domain accounts will be honored.
