Administrative Data

1. Assistance History Files for Research Counties:
The Assistance History dataset contains the Medi-Cal and program participation history of each Cal-Learn research teen.  Each record includes program participation history for each month from January 1987 through December 1996, a total of 120 months, as well as demographic information.

        2a. Baseline File
This file reports data from the GAIN system describing the client at Cal-Learn registration, and data from the AFDC system
describing the client and the client’s household at Cal-Learn registration. UC DATA has AFDC monthly program
information starting in March 1995, thus client household information for those clients who registered prior to March 1995
is unavailable. GAIN data are available from October  1994 through the end of randomization. This file defines the
sample of cases randomized in the GAIN offices.

       2b. Lodestar
                    i. Forms File
This file consists of data recorded in the AFLP case management system, in a format corresponding to the data
entry procedures followed by the AFLPs.  This file contains one record for each client for each AFLP site.  Clients
may have received services at multiple sites resulting in multiple records. Data are shown for clients from their first
entry into the AFLP program, even if that was before they entered Cal-Learn. Lodestar data collection for Cal-Learn
began in July 1995; however, AFLPs provided case management to pregnant and parenting teens before
Cal-Learn, thus the file has data on some teens from as early as June 1989. The file has a set of client identifying
                    variables.
                               Data

                    ii. Monthly File
This file consists of data recorded in the AFLP case management system in a format that provides the status history
of each teen enrolled in Cal-Learn.  Data are shown for clients from their first entry into the AFLP program, even if
that was before they entered Cal-Learn, and every month subsequent to their entry. Following an initial set of client
identifying variables, the data in the file contain three variables that reflect status history for teens receiving AFLP
case management services including funding source, active status, reason for status change.
                                Data

              iii. Contacts File
This file consists of detailed information produced from the Lodestar Client Contact Forms.  Each client has multiple
records according to the number of contacts she had during the data collection period.  If a client had four phone
contacts and two home visits in July, as well as three phone contacts in August, she would have seven phone
contact records and two home visit records. The Client Contact Form was added to the Lodestar system in
Mid-1996. Contacts prior to that time are not reflected in these data.

       2c. Monthly Program Participation File
This file reports data on program activity recorded for the client for each month following Cal-Learn registration.

Survey Data

1. Retrospective Survey Wave 1
Survey Research Center conducted the telephone interview with pregnant or parenting teenage young women between the ages of 12 and 18 in four California counties: Alameda, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and San Joaquin.  Each of these young women would have been or was enrolled in the Cal-Learn program at the time of interview.  The interview for this survey asks question about the teen's life experiences both before and after becoming pregnant and enrolling in Cal-Learn.

2. Retrospective Survey Wave 2
Between April 1996 and April 1999 Survey Research Center conducted the baseline telephone interview with pregnant or parenting teenage young women between the ages of 12 and 18 in four California counties: Alameda, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and San Joaquin.  Each of these young women would have been or was enrolled in the Cal-Learn program at the time of interview.  The interview for this survey asks question about the teen's life experiences both before and after becoming pregnant and enrolling in Cal-Learn.  The follow-up interview with the original respondents is documented in this dataset.
